Breathing Data: for the Harvard Public Health Review

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

Throughout summer and early fall 2021, I served as a Harvard Public Health Review (now HPHR Journal) Fellow / Columnist. The goal of this program (ongoing with new fellows) is to create accessible content about current public health topics. My blog, titled "Breathing Data", focused on air pollution's health impacts, current monitoring (data collection) efforts, and intersections with environmental justice and climate change.

Specific topics included:

  • An overview of the health impacts of air pollution

  • How to quantify the health impacts of air pollution (the 30,000 ft. view)

  • Air quality data availability (or lack thereof)

  • Environmental justice and the issue of air inequality

  • Low-cost air quality sensors and how they're being used in pursuit of environmental justice

  • Current research insights at the intersection of climate change, air quality, and health (parts 1, 2, and 3 explore the health impacts of fossil fuel combustion and a changing climate, potential health co-benefits from decarbonization, and some challenges associated with emissions-focused climate change mitigation)

  • The health impacts of wildfire smoke
